 Review: Trade-Off

Posted in Click 1 - POS Stories by admin on the July 10th, 2010

Trade-Off by Kevin Maney.

Trade-Off is centered on one big idea: There is a trade-off between fidelity and convenience. Maney defines fidelity as the totality of the experience of owning the product (or service.) Convenience refers to how difficult it is to acquire the product (or service.) Convenience also includes price, according to the author.
We used to recognize the trade-off by saying, “price, quality, service; pick any two.” That worked just fine for me but for some it might be clearer to distill the conundrum to simply ‘fidelity or convenience; pick either one.’
One nice feature of Trade-Off is that Maney gives plenty of interesting examples often in the form of mini stories. They left me feeling like a Fortune 500 insider.

I’m glad I read Trade-Off but a little more meat would have been tasty. I’m also glad that I borrowed it through the interlibrary loan program at my local library. It arrived in a few days, set me back about $2.50 in postage, and as far as I am concerned, when you consider fidelity vs. convenience, there was no trade-off at all!
